International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace - Message of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
On 19 December 2018, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 24 April as the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, which reaffirmed its commitment to the UN Charter and its principles for the peaceful settlement of disputes and the use of multilateral decision-making and diplomacy in achieving peaceful or diplomatic resolutions to conflicts among nations.
According to the Declaration of Foreign Policy and the foreign policy strategy, multilateral action is one of the supporting pillars of the Slovenian foreign policy. For Slovenia, as a small country, it is vital to be part of a multilateral system that enables it to act in line with the principles of sovereign equality of states, to show its international solidarity and responsibility, and to advocate its own interests on an equal footing with other countries.
The global challenges facing humankind today are very complex, demanding and multifaceted. No country, irrespective of its power and actual influence, can tackle them alone. The global issues and new challenges such as environmental protection, climate change, attaining SDGs, combating terrorism and violent extremism, and migration are intertwined, both geographically and thematically, which requires joint action.
A champion of the rule of law, Slovenia therefore strives for effective multilateralism, with the UN at its core. This is underpinned by the indivisibility and complementarity of peace and security, development and human rights, the respect for international law and the goals and principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
Providing and maintaining world peace and security strongly depend on the functioning of multilateralism, wherefore Slovenia supports all efforts aimed at conflict prevention and the peaceful settlement of disputes, including the strengthening of UN mediation efforts and further encouraging the use of mediation and capacity-building at the national, regional and international levels.
