Slovenian mission co-organized a side event on Artificial Intelligence

On Monday, October 28, 2019 Slovenian Permanent Mission together with UNESCO and the Council of Europe co-organized a side event entitled "Artificial Intelligence: Technology to Serve Humankind - Setting Legal Standards".

Key note speaker was Mr.  Fabrizio Hochschild-Drummond, special envoy of the Secretary-General for digital agenda, who presented a wider framework which needs to take into account the technology discussions. He congratulated Slovenia for an important role in this field, as addressing the issue of artificial intelligence is urgent and of critical importance. How we are going to address it in the future months is also key.

Mr. Jan Kleijssen from the Council of Europe has emphasized the importance of developing legal standards and has briefly presented the Council of Europe's plans in the field of setting up the legislative frameworks of artificial intelligence. Along the same lines Ms. Marie Paul Roudil, UNESCO's representative in New York, who in addition recalled the ethical standards.

Permanent Representative of Slovenia, Ambassador Darja Bavdaž Kuret has in conclusion wraped-up the remarks of participants, panelists (prof. Joanna Bryson, Moira Patterson (IEEE) and Marko Grobelnik, Inštitut Jožef Stefan) and public.

The discussion has clearly shown how the use of artificial intelligence is already impacting and changing our lives and how important it is to have a proper and timely response to it. Slovenia is a strong supporter of the development of artificial intelligence, which is based on human and human rights and calls for an ethical regulatory framework of implementation of AI. It will thus continue to actively participate in these debates; this event was a contribution of Slovenia in addressing this global challenge.

The event was web-cast live on the UN web page and can be seen in the archive at: webtv.un.org/watch/artificial-intelligence-technology-to-serve-humankind-setting-legal-standards/6098576297001/.
