Deputy Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the UN Simona Leskovar addresses General Assembly plenary on the question of equitable representation in membership of the UN Security Council

New York, 9 November 2011 – Deputy Permanent Representative Leskovar addressed the General Assembly annual debate on the Security Council reform and stressed that the reform of the Security Council is long overdue, and progress made during the Assembly’s 65th Session had been insufficient. Reform of the Council is a necessary structural change in the area of maintaining international peace and security, and need to address enlargement of the membership and improvement of body’s working methods.

She said that increasing the Council’s membership is not only a matter of fairness but also a necessity, and a reformed Security Council need to better reflect present geopolitical realities, be more representative, and have a strengthened legitimacy and authority.
