Slovenia celebrates the 20th Anniversary of its membership in the United Nations

New York, 22 May 2012 - To mark the 20th anniversary of membership of Slovenia (together with Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina) to the United Nations, the three countries organized a grand opening of the photo exhibition portraying the natural beauties of the three countries and its activities with the UN. President of UN General Assembly Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser attended the event, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made opening remarks

At the opening Permanent Representative of Slovenia, Ambassador Sanja Štiglic, stressed the fact that by becoming a member of the organization Slovenian nation fulfilled its long time dream to become a full-fledged and equal member of international community. She pointed out Slovenia's contribution to the maintenance of international peace and security.


She also informed that earlier today Slovenia, in close cooperation with the UN Information Service in Vienna, launched a teaching handbook for elementary schools titled "Together Stronger", to teach future generations about the indispensable role of the United Nations in addressing contemporary global issues. Ambassador Štiglic also mentioned the photo exhibition which represents a fragment of “Picture Slovenia” exhibition, that was set up at the beginning of celebrations of the 20th anniversary of Slovenian statehood and is being concluded with the end of this exhibition here today. 

The event marked the conclusion of a series of events inside and outside Slovenia that consituted the celebrations of the anniversary.
