Ambassador Štiglic addressed the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the NPT

New York, 5 May 2010 – Ambassador Štiglic in her address at the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) stressed that that NPT is the cornerstone of international peace, security and stability and our common goal should be universal acceptance and implementation of all objectives enshrined in the NPT. Slovenia calls to NPT State Parties to ratify the CTBT and thus enable its entry into force, and is also keen on starting negotiations for a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty in the Conference on Disarmament.

Ambassador Štiglic said that nuclear energy is one of the most important strategic recourses and an engine of development, but appropriate control measures must be in place to prevent the misuse of this sensitive technology.

At the end Ambassador Štiglic expressed Slovenia’s full support to the priorities and initiatives taken by the Director General of the IAEA in the area of medical applications, particularly in relation to cancer diagnosis and treatment in developing countries, where Slovenia is assisting its partners in the Western Balkans. Slovenia has ratified the amended Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) and calls upon all other States Parties to the NPT to do the same.
