New York, 12 November 2010 – Ambassador Sanja Štiglic, addressed the plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly on Report of the Security Council and Question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council and related matters (agenda items 29 and 119). Ambassador Štiglic stressed in her statement that Council’s report again showed that the variety and complexity of its workload continued to grow. She also encouraged Council members to continue to strive for more analytical reports and engage more with UN members in an interactive exchange of views on the report’s preparation.
On the reform process, she said it must address enlarged membership and improved working methods. The Security Council should expand in both categories of members, with special attention paid to African countries as well as small and medium sized states, which accounted for vast majority of member states. She also urged consolidating compilation text presented by the chairman of the intergovernmental negotiations and moving forward negotiations on the question of equitable representation in the Security Council.
