PR Štiglic addresses the General Assembly on the human right to water and sanitation

New York, 29 July 2011- Ambassador Štiglic expressed the critical importance of water stating that, “water is without a doubt the global challenge of the 21st Century, by 2025 1.8 billion people will live in areas affected by severe water stress.” She explained that the issue of water and sanitation is closely linked to poverty and the lack of these necessities robs people of their dignity, opportunities and safety. The Ambassador highlighted the need for improved water governance, especially in the area of environmentally sustainable water use and illustrated how the right to water and sanitation is coupled with the enjoyment of other rights such as the right to life, education, work, health and food.
She stressed that one of the thematic priorities of the Slovenian Development Cooperation was sustainable water management.
